Horse Sense Zenyatta Wins
In the past, voters have supported the horses occasionally for the AP awards. 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat was on No.81 among the AP’s top 100 athletes of the century that was just ahead of the Cal Ripken Jr.
Zenyatta who is 5 years old won 5-0 campaign in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita in 2009 with stirring last to first win over the males. Racheal Alexandra who is tree years old won the Preakness stakes and completed an 8-0 term by beating the older males in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga.
According to Baffert, horses deserve to be included to the year-end sports honor awards. He added that these horses had done something astonishing and impressive and because of their work they deserved the gratitude. He called those horses as half human.
Let us have a look at the last 10 years in the horse racing from Azeri to Zenyatta.
Azeri gained the dominancy in 2002 by winning the title of horse of the year. In 2007 Rags and Riches won the Belmont Stakes.
In May Rachel won the Preakness and become the first one who did so in 85 years. Zenyatta won the race and made it to be the single best race of the decade in November. She shares the fame of this year with Alexandra. After the announcement of the results in January, one of them will become the horse of the year.
Zenyatta ran second to the tennis star Serena Williams and Rachel Alexandra on the seventh. This shows that 2009 was the year of the female having two females out of the top 10 Athletes of 2009.
